Europe's great hotel spas and pools: rooftops, lakes and the Bosphorus
A pool with a view is the quiet luxury of a grand hotel. These are the spas and pools in the Atlas worth planning a weekend around.
Rooftop pools above the city
At Le Bristol Paris, the rooftop pool sits in a teak-and-glass room inspired by a 19th-century yacht, with views over the rooftops of Paris. In Munich, the Mandarin Oriental has a rooftop terrace and pool looking over the city's towers, and in Barcelona the Mandarin Oriental has its own rooftop pool above the Passeig de Gràcia.
Pools on the water
In Istanbul, the Çırağan Palace has an infinity pool at the water's edge of the Bosphorus. In Hamburg, The Fontenay has a pool overlooking the Alster lake.
The great spas
In Geneva, The Woodward has a Guerlain spa and the longest indoor pool in the city. In Milan, Palazzo Parigi has a grand spa between Brera and the fashion district. Above Zurich, The Dolder Grand pairs its spa with one of the most serious art collections of any hotel in Europe.
A spa day, done well
- Book treatments when you book the room. Weekend appointments fill first.
- Ask whether the pool and spa are open to hotel guests only, or also to day visitors.
- Arrive thirty minutes early. Most spas ask you to.
- Pair it with lunch at the hotel. Many spas include a light menu by the pool.
