What to wear: a dress code guide for her, from the opera to the casino
“Black tie”, “smart”, “no denim”: the codes of Europe's grand rooms were written with men in mind. Here is what they mean for her.
White tie and black tie
White tie calls for a floor-length evening gown; long gloves are traditional but optional. For black tie, a long dress is always right, and an elegant cocktail dress is accepted almost everywhere outside a ball or a state occasion. Match the formality of his dinner jacket rather than the season.
A three-star dinner
“Smart” means a dress, or tailored trousers with a beautiful top or jacket. Heels are your choice; the walk from the car is short. Go lightly with perfume: in a great dining room, it competes with the food and the wine.
The hotel bar
The great hotel bars are small and dressed for the evening. A cocktail dress or a well-cut suit is perfect. Bring a light layer: the old rooms are often cool.
The casino
The gaming rooms of Europe's grand casinos expect smart evening dress. Leave beachwear and flip-flops at the hotel, and bring identification: you will be asked for it at the door.
The golf clubhouse
On the course: a collared or tailored top, tailored trousers, shorts or skirt, and golf shoes. No denim. In the clubhouse dining room, many private clubs keep an evening code for everyone, so ask the secretary before you arrive.
The cigar lounge
If you join him, choose fabrics that do not hold smoke, and a jacket you can leave in the cloakroom afterwards. Many cigar rooms have a separate terrace or bar if you would rather not stay.
